HEC members get first-hand information on the harbour

Members of the newly-formed Harbourfront Enhancement Committee (HEC) today (May 12) saw for themselves the latest condition of the harbour-fronts of the Victoria Harbour.

HEC members, including the Chairman Professor Lee Chack-fan, took part in a technical ferry tour to familiarise themselves with the latest developments on the harbour-fronts areas.

The round-the-harbour tour covered various locations including Central, Wan Chai, Southeast Kowloon, Hung Hom, Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon and Sheung Wan.

Officers from Planning Department, Territory Development Department and Architectural Services Department briefed the HEC members on the latest development of these locations.

Useful views and experience on improving and beautifying the harbour-fronts were exchanged. The HEC secretariat will organise more focused tours as necessary in the course of the committee's work.

HEC is tasked to advise the government on planning, design and development of the existing and new harbour-fronts and adjoining areas of the Victoria Harbour, with a view to protecting the Harbour; improving the accessibility, utilisation and vibrancy of the harbour-front areas; and safeguarding public enjoyment of the harbour through a balanced, effective and participatory approach.

The first meeting of HEC was held on May 6 while the next meeting will be scheduled on July 8, 2004.

Ends/Wednesday, May 12, 2004
